PRO RACER TIPS

Jimmy: Did you see what that pro driver had on his car?

James: Yeah! I’ve never seen that before……must be some crazy proto-type part that is unavailable and won't be out for months.

Jimmy: Hey wait a second…  I remember seeing that part somewhere in the CEN Racing catalog!

James:  Oh wait…. On CEN's website you can see just exactly what the Pro’s modify and do to their rides to make them even more durable!  Now we can use their “years of experience” and learn their secrets directly from CEN's website!  Awesome!!

Jimmy: Sweet!  Wait till next weekend I’m going to take podium and beat old man T.h.o.l.k.

This week's tip comes from Andrew Smolnik of CEN Racing.

Hey guys! This is Andrew Smolnik and I will be sharing some of my racing secrets with you the consumer. One of the most important aspects of racing radio control cars is being prepared while at the track. It is extremely important to make sure that you have adequate replacement parts as parts do wear out and / or break unexpectedly. While this is rare the worst thing is to end your race day because you do not have a $2 part on hand.

Second is to know your vehicle. Go over your vehicle before each and every outing onto the track. Inspect its integrity, making sure that there are no loose screws or parts that are suspect. It is highly recommended to always keep your car as clean as possible. This makes the vehicle much easier to work on.

I always recommend new racers to experiment with different set ups. Try different hole locations and see how it feels on the track. Have a friend record your lap times, change something and compare. This will give you an idea of which hole location or set up is better for the track that you are driving on.

When you become more experienced it is highly recommended to begin upgrading your vehicle so that it will perform better. I always try to make my race vehicles as light as possible while maintaining durability. This is a key factor to jumping farther and going faster!

Clutch shoes are extremely important as this is where all the power from your engine is transferred to your drive-train. Maintaining your clutch shoes is extremely important. Every 30-60min or so of track time I recommend taking your engine out and sanding down your clutch shoes, this will resurface them and allow better grab on your clutch bell. I use a fine grit sand paper and sand away all the carbon build up on the contact points of the clutch shoes and inside of the clutch bell. I also file down the burs on aluminum shoes. This is also a good time to check your clutch bell bearings for integrity. If they feel gritty it may be time to replace them. You wouldn’t want to end your race just because of a blow clutch bearing.
